It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon in April. The girls had settled back into the school routine since their return from Easter/Spring Break. I had decided to cut my day short; I let my secretary leave early and I finished up my daily reports before two. I usually work until six o’clock in the evening, so I was looking forward to a nice walk back to my campus apartment, having an afternoon to catch-up on some of my reading, maybe watch a video before a leisurely dinner, and just have an all round pleasant, trouble-free afternoon and evening.

Two girls caught trying to cheat have to face the consequences

Prologue

I am Eric Davenport, Headmaster of The Brandon Academy, a boarding school for girls between the ages of 14 to 19. The school is tucked away on fifty acres of beautiful rolling hills in southern New York. Reverend Thomas K Brandon, the former headmaster and now President of our school board, appointed me to this position in 1964, after being both an instructor and a housemaster for eight years. I am responsible for the well-being, education, and discipline of the 200 girls residing here, as well as the everyday running of the school and its facilities.

Saturday Detention with the Headmaster

This is the sixth of several stand-alone stories about a strict yet caring headmaster, Eric Davenport, and the girls at his school.

Saturday morning found me surprisingly rested considering all that was on my mind from the previous evening. I arose about six-thirty and went for my morning jog. When I returned, I woke Rebecca before taking a shower. Once dressed and shaved, I was ready to tackle the day.

I found Becca in the kitchen preparing breakfast. “I hope you’re not trying to bribe the Headmaster this morning, Miss Shaw-Davenport?” I teased.

“Oh, no Sir, but I thought my dad and I could have breakfast together – before I have to report to detention. I fixed a cheese and veggie omelet and toast.”

An Evening in the Headmaster’s Office

This is the fifth of several stand-alone stories about a strict, yet caring headmaster, Eric Davenport, and the girls at his school.

After dinner, I returned to my office to get ready for Helen Archer and Leslie Carlton to arrive for their canings. While waiting, I busied myself with some paper work and the planning of Saturday’s detention.

About 8pm, I brought a straight back chair over near my desk for the girls to lean over while I dealt with their bottoms. I placed two canes on my desk and the punishment book. Then I returned to my paper work.

It was the second Thursday in March 1970, about 8.30 in the evening, I had returned to my office to finish reading through the weekly discipline reports and make a list of the girls that I would need to deal with before the weekend began. Sometimes I could simply give a reminder at our Friday morning assembly, many times, I would call girls out to report to Maria Jordan, my Assistant Headmistress, or to me after assembly, and there were occasionally girls that I felt needed immediate discipline. This particular week had been full of various misbehaviors and rule violations.

It started out as a quiet April morning. This was our first assembly since Easter Break. We had chapel at 8:30, followed by my morning assembly at 9:15 as we do every Friday. The girls had an exceptionally good month in both behavior and academics, so I decided a reward was in order. At the end of my general announcements about the upcoming riding competition, the start of swim team tryouts, and the parents’ open house the first week in May, I announced that I had a surprise for all of them.

Lisa Selects the Paddle

Standing before me in tears was the very beautiful, eighteen-year-old, Senior Head Girl, Lisa Bentley. My Science Chairman, Dr Marcus Newcomb, who was holding two papers, had accompanied her into my office. “In all my years at this academy, I have never had a girl cheat on a final exam. I demand that she be expelled immediately,” he fumed.

“Oh, Headmaster, please don’t expel me!” Lisa begged.

“Both of you calm down, so I can ask you a few questions. First, Dr Newcomb, how do you know Miss Bentley cheated?”

An Introduction

The school is tucked away on fifty acres of beautiful rolling hills in southern New York. Reverend Thomas K. Brandon, the former headmaster and now President of our school board, appointed me to this position four years ago in 1964, after being both an instructor and a housemaster (Dean) for eight years. I am responsible for the well-being, education, and discipline of the two hundred girls residing here, as well as the everyday running of the school and its facilities.

Sarah finds herself in a trouble at school and then again at home with her new family

Part 1: Trouble at School

The school clock behind the secretary read 1:30 as Sarah Crane shifted in her seat, then twirled her pony-tail. It had been almost twenty minutes since she was sent to the office.

‘I’m going to be in so much trouble,’ Sarah thought, as she waited for the Principal. ‘Smoking is an automatic paddling or a Saturday detention or both.’ Sarah rubbed her sweaty hands on her blue jeans.

“Miss Crane, join me please.” Towering over the five foot school girl, six-foot-two, 225 lbs, Principal Mark Johnson spoke firmly as he held the door open for Sarah to enter. Afterwards he closed the door. “Stand in front of my desk,” he commanded as he took his seat behind the large oak desk. “Do you know why you’re here, Miss Crane?”
