A journalist investigates attitudes to corporal punishment.
My name is Claire Cooper. I am a retired journalist, and I was browsing through some early papers from my career when I chanced to come upon an interview I did as a trainee back in the early sixties. The magazine I worked for was doing a series of interviews on ‘ordinary family life’. I was sent to interview a lady who had agreed to talk about her experiences and her views on corporal punishment or ‘a smacked bottom’ as it was referred to in those days. As you can imagine, I was very nervous as this was one of my first assignments. This is the transcript.

A couple relaxing in their garden have an interesting chat
Back in the early nineteen sixties, Charles Daventry and his wife Clarissa, both in their late fifties, are sitting in the garden of their luxurious house on the outskirts of one of England’s fashionable towns, sipping their glasses of Pimms. Charles is reading a newspaper and Clarissa is reading a novel. Charles is a very successful barrister and Clarissa is from a very wealthy titled family. Money to them is no object. Charles is still quite good looking at his age and Clarissa is an extremely attractive woman.
Suddenly Charles looks up from his newspaper. “Clarrie, were you spanked as a child?”

Trying to deceive their mother works out badly for two sisters
Saturday morning, and two sisters, Eleanor, aged nineteen, and Cynthia aged seventeen, were on their way into town to go round the shops, and also for Eleanor to meet her boyfriend, Eric, without her mother knowing. She had been banned by her mother from seeing him as she considered him to be totally unsuitable for her. The girls went into the park to be away from prying eyes and to wait for Eric. Punctual to the minute, Eric arrived and Cynthia went off to the shops. Later in the morning, Cynthia went off home.

Curiosity can be painful!
Nick and Amanda were watching a documentary programme on TV about education. Suddenly there was a flashback to the 1960s and a reference to corporal punishment.
After the programme ended Amanda asked Nick: “Do you think girls really got smacked in those days?”
“Course they did,” replied Nick. “I remember my mum saying that she got whacked with a plimsoll, they called it the slipper.”
“My mum’s never mentioned it. I’ll have to ask her when I next see her.”
Nothing more was said. A couple of days later Amanda spoke to her mum on the telephone and asked her about the slipper.

There’s a surprise in store for a girl when she gets home.
Her father’s slipper lay in the middle of the settee.
‘Mum’s going a bit mental leaving that there,’ Dorothy thought. ‘I’d get a right ear bashing if I’d have left my slipper there.’ Mum never allowed anyone to put their slippers or shoes onto the furniture, whether they were wearing them or not.
“Oh, you’re home dear? I didn’t hear you come in.” Mrs Rock said, as she descended the stairs.
“Only just, mum.” Dorothy looked towards the slipper on the settee. “I was wondering if you were going senile?”
“Probably dear, probably,” Mrs Rock agreed as she went to arrange the flowers on the sideboard.

A stepmother gets her revenge
“Flossie, come here will you,” called Mr Brackstone from his chair in the lounge.
‘Flossie’, his sixteen year old daughter, came in from the kitchen. “Yes Daddy, what is it.?”
“Come and sit down,” said Mr Brackstone.
“There’s no easy way to say this, but Wendy and I are going to get married.”
Mr Brackstone was divorced, and had met a young woman and they had fallen in love.
“What!!” cried Flossie. “Daddy, you can’t. She’s nearly young enough to be your daughter.”
“I know it must be a shock to you, but age has nothing to do with it. We both love each other,” said Mr Brackstone.

A teacher punishes a man’s daughter, but there are consequences. Contains male punishment.
“Had a good day love?” Asked Mum as eighteen year old Delia got home from school.
“No I haven’t,” snapped Delia angrily.
“Why, what’s the matter?” Asked Mum.
Delia held out her hand. There were two ugly red lines across her palm.
“Where did you get those?”
“That cow of an English teacher gave them to me after school. Didn’t half hurt.”
“That’s not fair,” replied Mum.
“I’m going to tell Dad, he’ll sort her out,” said Delia.
Dad arrived home just before dinner.
“Dad, that cow of an English teacher gave me the cane this afternoon. She’s been after me all this term. Look.” Delia held out her hand.

Twin Girls find their school and their parents take a different view to a topical issue of the early 20th century.
1912, and two twin girls, Geraldine, and Sophia, daughters of Mr and Mrs Croxley, had been sent home from their exclusive boarding school. They had been caught sneaking back into the school after attending a suffragette meeting, a movement for which they were strong supporters. Their punishment was suspension from the school for four days after a severe telling-off from the headmistress. Their mother had received a telegram telling her of the decision and that the girls would be on their way home. The girls arrived home and rang the doorbell. Their mother opened the door and said nothing until after the girls had stepped inside.

Do parents always know what their daughters are getting up to?
We are back in the 1970s when physically disciplining ones offspring was still the norm. Mrs Janet Dove, mother of eighteen year old twins David and Hannah, is having a morning cup of tea with her friend, Wendy Johnson.
“You seem very preoccupied, Janet, is something wrong?” Asked Wendy, as she sipped her tea.
“Well, yes, there is, but it’s something I’m not very proud of,” replied Janet.
“Care to tell me about it?”
“I suppose I must; I need to tell somebody, get it off my chest,” replied Janet, almost in tears.
“Come along, dear, you can tell me. We’ve been friends for long enough.”

Surprising developments in the work place.
Lorna hurried into work all hot and flustered. Late again. Unfortunately, to get to the room that she worked in she had to pass the practice manager’s office and she would see that Lorna was late again.
‘Perhaps she won’t see me,’ thought Lorna as she crept up the stairs and tiptoed along the corridor.
She reached the manager’s door and crept past.
“Lorna!” Came a shout from within.
‘Damn,’ thought Lorna. ‘She’s seen me.’
She stopped in her tracks and went back and put her head round the door.
“Morning Sal,” she said cheerily.
“Late again I see,” said Sally.
“Not by much,” replied Lorna.
