Miss Peters’ Transformed

Witnessing the Head Girl’s Punishment provides the incentive for a life change

by Harry James

Jane Peters had been more or less obliged by the Headmistress to witness Head Girl Eleanor Moore’s severe six stroke caning. After all, the caning was the result of Eleanor having sworn at Miss Peters in a tutorial.

Jane had always been impressed by Eleanor Moore, a highly able and talented girl, whose abilities were almost certain to take her much further in life than Jane’s own modest achievements. In fact, Jane almost always admired the most able senior girls and wished that she herself could manage to be more like them in the way they seemed to take hold of life and extract the maximum from it. Jane’s own low profile and, very frankly, she admitted to herself, dull demeanour and approach to life compared very poorly to the characters of the energetic girls she taught.

The Head Girl’s Temper (Part 2)

The Head Girl’s second punishment

 by Harry James

Head Girl Eleanor Moore was laying on her bed in her study; she was laying on her side and wearing only a T-shirt.  It was just past 6:20pm on a Wednesday evening. Just over an hour ago Eleanor received 6 strokes of the senior cane from Headmistress, Dr Amberley, for gross rudeness to her English Mistress and Tutor, Jane Peters. The punishment had been on her bare bottom, which did not happen very often.

On Miss Amberley’s instructions, Eleanor visited the school nurse and was given arnica cream to put on her bottom. Eleanor had to be very, very gentle with herself to apply it to her sore and stinging behind.

The Head Girl’s Temper

The Head Girl’s temper tantrum means serious consequences

 by Harry James

Eleanor Moore was standing shocked at her own outburst. Eleanor is just 18 years old; she is Head Girl at the prestigious Lady Anne Hart Academy for Young Ladies in deepest Wiltshire. She was appointed Head Girl when she joined the Upper 6th at the beginning of term in September.

The Head Girl appointment had been a bit of a risk for the Headmistress, Miss Winifred Amberley. Eleanor was the outstanding candidate. She had an impressive academic record at the school, she was Senior Hockey Captain, a fine long distance runner and a very accomplished pianist as well. Understandably, she was both liked and respected by the Upper and Lower schools and by the staff in general.

Second Appointment

A sequel to the previous story ‘And Mother Makes Four’

By Harry James

It is Friday 29th November 1996, three weeks exactly since both Dorothy Wilston and her daughter, Head Girl Marjorie, were caned in Marjorie’s Headmistress’s study for the same offence, though in Dorothy’s case the offence had taken place 25 years earlier, when she had been Deputy Head Girl, and the punishment was carried out by her now retired old Headmistress, Margaret Floyd.

In the days following her punishment Dorothy had often thought she had experienced a bizarre and surreal dream; it couldn’t possibly have happened, could it? Could she really have called her old Headmistress and to all intents and purposes requested to be punished for her 25 year old offence? Then something would happen to tell her that it really was true. One early morning, 3 days after getting caned, she had sat on the edge of her bed and been sharply reminded by the stinging soreness of her bottom. Her first instinct was to worry that something was wrong, then she remembered what it was!

And Mother Makes Four

The Head Girl and her two best friends get into trouble, with a little help from Mother

 by Harry James

The telephone in the hall rang. Dorothy Wilston strode out from the front drawing room and picked up the handset. It was Monday and just after six o’clock in the evening on a cold 4th November in 1996.

“Pickerton 4751,” intoned Dorothy.

Of course, ‘Pickerton’ had been replaced by the all number system many years past, but Dorothy liked the old ways. And life in the Lake District still retained many of the old world graces, even if another side of Dorothy had always embraced all that was new, interesting and exciting.

Nurses at Sea

Three  Nursing Friends go to sea on a Hospital Ship

by Harry James

VADs (Voluntary Aid Detachments) 1st Class Annabel ‘Hazey’ Hazlebrooke, Moira Bettison and Victoria ‘Vicky’ Mates had become the closest possible friends over the past 7 years; they worked together, they laughed and cried together, they enjoyed the good times together and supported each other through the tough times. Their friendship had begun when they had entered training as nurses in Spring 1937 as 18 year olds, though the oldest, Hazey, turned 19 only a few weeks later, she was a full 10 months older than Vicky and 8 months older than Moira. It was now February 1944 and the girls, as they still called themselves, were nursing as VADs on board a Hospital Ship.
