Samantha Gilmore

A girl spends a long time wondering what it would be like to be caned.

By Gillian Howard

Hello, I am Samantha Gilmore and I am 18 years old. The year is 1969. Like all my friends, we enjoyed the swinging sixties with the new freedoms the era had brought us. I attended a co-educational grammar school in the north west of England where corporal punishment was an every day occurrence. I had, over the six years at the school, gained a reputation as a goody-goody because I had never had to endure any form of corporal punishment.

On the last day in the lower sixth, my then boyfriend, Alex, had received 6 of the best of the Headmaster for bullying and that evening, while mum and dad were out, I had seen the welts across Alex’s bottom and run my fingers along them. He told me they were still painful when he sat down. It caused me to have a strange but pleasant feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Juliet Smithson’s Caning

A girl finds it pays not to be late

By Gillian Howard

It’s 09.10 am Friday 19 th July 1996. I am Juliet Smithson 5’8″ tall, long black hair, green eyes and slim athletic build. I’m captain of our school hockey and netball teams. I am standing, along with one 5th year girl and 3 boys from the lower 6th, with our hands on heads and noses to the wall as the rest of school file past us on the way to Friday Assembly.

It all started a week earlier. The Headmaster had proposed that the following Friday would be a charity ‘dress down’ day. He also added that just because all exams had finished too many pupils were arriving late and he was cracking down on it.

Return from the USA

A girl experiences contrasting discipline styles

By Gillian Howard

I was born in 1956 in Northwest England and my father was a manager at a large Manchester hotel. Mum worked part time as receptionist there. In 1964 dad was offered a similar position with a lot more money in Miami, with our own house as part of his package. We all emigrated in the summer and I started school in grade 3. At my new school they used the paddle to administer corporal punishment and this was carried out in the corridor outside your classroom by the principal. Each student was given a student handbook which laid down the school rules.

For a Friend

A girl finds herself in a no-win situation

By Gillian Howard

In 1964 I passed my 11+ exam and went to the local mixed grammar school. I had always been a shy girl but really enjoyed school work. I was only very petite with blonde hair. We all had to wear uniform and for the girls this consisted of green skirt and white shirt, green knickers, green blazer and green and grey beret, and grey knee length socks. Failure to wear this would result in a visit to the Headmistress for the cane. Boys wore short grey trousers in first 2 years then long grey trousers, knee length grey socks like the girls and we heard they had to wear white Y front underpants, green blazer and green/grey cap. For PE and games we wore red gym knickers which fitted tight around the legs and nothing under, and a yellow shirt again nothing to be worn under. The boys wore white cotton shorts to just above the knee with nothing under and a white vest.

The Margaret Smith Story

Corporal punishment follows a girl through her academic career.

 By Gillian Howard

My story goes back to the late sixties and early seventies. When I was 4 and 5 I had a minor speech impediment which meant I had to attend weekly speech therapy sessions every week for 9 months. This resulted in me falling behind most pupils and I was tormented by the other students so I became very introverted and I found it hard to participate in class. When I was approaching 11 I had a growing spurt and was 5’1” tall, a lot taller than any other girl in my class and got called more names. When the time for the 11+ exam came around I was crying through most of the exam, so failed miserably. I was then sent to a secondary modern school.

Alexandra Waterworth’s Caning

Standing around waiting gets a girl into trouble.

By Gillian Howard

My name is Alexandria Waterworth and I am 18, long blonde curly hair, very slim, and I am in the Upper sixth at our local girls Grammar school. I have a provisional place at Manchester University to study French. My boyfriend of 2 years is Glen and he has a place also at Manchester to study applied Mathematics. We are really looking forward to being at uni together as we already have a full relationship.

Our schools still use corporal punishments and at our school that consists of class punishments; which can be the slipper across your skirt, the cane across your hand or you could have your skirt raised and 1 or both legs smacked very hard. If you are often naughty in class you could be made to lift your skirt above your knees and receive 2 or 3 strokes across your calfs or you could be sent to the headmaster when the punishment would carried out by the headmaster in the presence of his secretary. That could be either the slipper across the knickers or the cane across the knickers with your skirt removed.

Jessica Rylands Story

Following the experiences of a sixth form girl.

By Gillian Howard

My name is Jessica Rylands and I went to a Religious private mixed school. I was born in 1980 and left in 1998 to go to university. Our school was one of the last to ban corporal punishment and our final year was the last year it was used. As we started our last year we were informed by our new Headmaster that all forms of corporal punishment would cease at the end of the school year but he added that doesn’t mean we will start slacking off before then. He added that he would personally be carrying out all punishments involving the cane and girls would normally receive it on their hands and boys over 1 layer of clothing on the buttocks. If girls were deemed to have committed a very serious breach of rules like bullying or smoking or bringing the good name of the school down then they would also be caned over 1 item of clothing on the buttocks with the school secretary present as witness. Also any punishments given by the Headmaster would be placed on the school notice board for 4 weeks, detailing what punishment had been given and the reason for it. After 2 weeks there were 12 boys’ names on it and 5 girls, all of whom had received the cane across the hands.

Georgina Sutcliffe

A shy girl is encouraged to be more adventurous

By Gillian Howard

I was born in 1956 in the south of England, but moved north after the death of my father in 1960, and I am an only child. I was very shy and had very few friends when I moved North, but I met one girl, Lucinda Halliwell, when we were placed next to each other in our second year at school. My name is Georgina Sutcliffe. Like me, Lucinda was also an only child and her parents were divorced and she lived with her mum. Over the next few years we became inseparable and also our mums became the best of friends. By the time we were eleven we had started to go on holiday together.

Dawn Marsh

A girl’s experiences of punishment at school

By Gillian Howard

I am Dawn Marsh and I attended a mixed grammar school in the early 70s in the midlands. I was very popular at school with both the boys and girls. I was not in the top stream but I was doing fairly well and was hoping to go to University. I was quite well behaved but had earned several detentions and been placed on report on three occasions. However, apart from receiving 4 strokes of the slipper across my bare bottom for swearing in  the shower after a hockey game in the first year, I had not been subject of any other form of corporal punishment during the following 5 years.

Trials and tribulations in a new sixth form

By Gillian Howard

In the summer of 1986 I had passed all my GCSE exams with ‘A’ passes and was going to 6th form college to study Maths, Chemistry and Physics, along with Sociology at A level. My parents were both doctors and wanted me to follow them into medicine, which I was eager to do. I had attended a very good mixed grammar school which, until the abolition of corporal punishment, had applied it on a regular basis.

I myself had the back of my legs smacked on several occasions, and had received the slipper last year just before Christmas when all the girls in our class were given the slipper for making too much noise getting changed after PE. I had never been caned even though I had seen the welts left by it in the changing rooms.
