Seven Years On

In serious trouble for only the second time in her school career, the result is painfully similar

By David

Diane could scarcely believe her bad luck when the Headmaster himself found her surreptitiously enjoying a cigarette round the back of the school. She knew that smoking was a serious offence, even for an Upper Sixth Former like her, but she had been desperate to light up as soon as her exam had ended. Now she was ordered to follow him to his study.

This was not the first time that Diane had been led there. The previous occasion was seven years earlier, when she was just a little Year Seven, only a month into her time at the Grammar School. During morning assembly she had been whispering and giggling with her best friend, unaware that the Head’s eyes were on her from the vantage point of the platform. But at the end, when he marched down the hall, he had singled her out. Once in his study, she listened incredulously while he informed her that talking in assembly was a serious offence always punished with a caning. In her case, as a new pupil, this would be limited to two strokes.

Delivering the Message

Volunteering to run an errand proves to be a big mistake

By David

Being a naturally helpful person, Eva volunteered to take her Biology Teacher’s note to the Head’s office after the last class of the day. It would also give her an excuse to chat with Mr Clark’s Secretary, Angie, a neighbour of hers who at twenty-three was only five years older than Eva herself.

Eva quickly handed the message over, and then they launched into an exchange of gossip about their latest boyfriends. Only after a moment’s pause were both girls aware of the noises emanating from Mr Clark’s study, which led directly off Angie’s office. There was a sharp crack followed by a yell, repeated twice more. Then the door opened and a shamefaced boy scuttled out, one hand pressed against his rear, and rapidly made his exit into the corridor outside.

The Scholarship Girl

A better disciplined school has many advantages for a new girl, until she finds herself subject to that discipline.

By David

It had been the high point of Jane’s life when she won a scholarship to the prestigious private Ladies Academy in her home town. Now she could leave behind her scruffy Comprehensive with its low standards and casual attitudes. Poor though her background was, she had earned a place alongside the local female elite.

From the start, Jane revelled in the superb facilities and the excellent sports ground which she enjoyed in the limited time between her demanding classes. She was proud to wear the uniform, including the maroon gold-braided blazer and school tie. Sixth Form girls had the option of trousers but Jane, who had worn them throughout her comprehensive years, was now pleased to put on a school skirt or summer dress over her regulation underwear. Keen to conform to her new standards, she always ensured that her knickers were maroon as well.

Late to Class

Some of the consequences of a simple class punishment

By David

Upper Sixth Arts were grinding through their last class of the day under the supervision of their form tutor when, ten minutes into the lesson, an out of breath and somewhat tearful Sally burst into the room.

“I’m so sorry I’m late, Mrs Gibson,” she blurted out. “The thing is…”

Mrs Gibson had experienced a long and tiresome day, so was in no mood for laborious explanations.

“How dare you arrive at this time?” She interrupted. “You can have no adequate excuse for this misbehaviour!”

Trembling by now, Sally again tried to explain herself.

“I couldn’t help it, Miss,” was as far as she got before her increasingly irascible teacher cut in on her again. Above all else, she hated to be addressed as Miss.

Her Last Stroke

It could be the last caning for both girl and headmistress

By David

It was with great satisfaction that Maud Clark could look back on her twenty years as Headmistress. When she had arrived, the school was in disarray both academically and socially. Her weak predecessor had allowed individual teachers to discipline the girls as they saw fit. Some were liberal users of the slipper whilst others had let pupils run riot. Straightaway she had introduced a policy where corporal punishment could be applied only by herself or her deputy, and only one instrument was to be used, which she had brought from her previous school; a two-foot long rattan cane.

Trouble at the Agency

The manager of a failing estate agency is encouraged to do better.

By David

Philip Norton was a very angry man. For years he had built up a string of Estate Agencies, working on the principle of maximum delegation to the local managers. These managers and their staff were expected to acquire an intimate knowledge of their areas, to become involved with community events, and to cultivate an almost personal relationship with their clients. It required dedication on their part beyond any nine-to-five job and it had paid off in every case – except one. Philip had no doubt the fault in that one case lay in staff attitude. He would have to pay them an urgent visit, and he would go equipped with the means to secure better performance in the future.

The Only Remedy

A sixth form girl discovers she’s not exempt from punishment.

By David

There was an unsettled atmosphere in the Upper Sixth English class. Mrs Maltby had taken the girls through the finer points of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ in previous lessons and had now instructed them to write an essay on the bard’s  understanding of Scottish history, but there was constant fidgeting and murmuring going on. It was so frustrating for her. This was a class of near-adults behaving like unruly children, yet she had no way of disciplining them. Detentions and impositions were unheard of for sixth formers. Eventually her patience gave way.

“I have had enough of all your disturbances,” she suddenly announced. “The next girl acting out of order will be sent to the Headmistress.”

British Intern, American Discipline

Working in America was a dream come true for this British girl, but she had to pay a price

by David

Diane Richards was a high achiever, destined, she believed, for a stellar career in big business. After A-levels she had spurned traditional courses in favour of an Applied Finance degree which guaranteed practical placements with international companies, and she had been overjoyed to learn that in the vacation before her second year she had secured an internship with a firm that not only paid her a good wage but promised experience at their Headquarters in Miami, Florida.

Once landed, Diane entered American life with gusto. She was provided with superb hotel accommodation and she shared a lavish open plan office with several other young and enthusiastic trainees. She was aware that, though the company was at the cutting edge of technology, the atmosphere was quite conservative and dominated by men who all wore immaculate suits and ties. She was glad that she had equipped herself before arrival with two expensive outfits, both consisting of a jacket and a tight knee-length skirt, which suited her slim figure admirably.

The Escalating Punishment

Giggling at another’s misfortune gets a girl into trouble, then manages to make things even worse.

By David

The Sixth Form English class was proceeding as normal until the Headmaster’s Secretary appeared, to summon Tony Bullinger to Mr Clarkson’s presence. A buzz of speculation was quickly silenced by Mrs Summers, but an apprehensive mood descended over the class until Tony reappeared about ten minutes later. Clearly in pain, he hobbled to his seat and sat down very slowly and carefully, much to the amusement of Susie, who whispered and giggled to her neighbour.

“Susanna Smithson, stand up!” ordered the teacher. “How dare you laugh at Bullinger like that! You can write out two hundred times ‘I must not take pleasure in another’s suffering’, and bring it to me first thing tomorrow. Now sit down and be quiet.”

The Worst Humiliation

When a girl objects to her gym teacher’s punishment, she lands in even more trouble.

By David

Helen loved all her school lessons apart from gymnastics. She could not understand why, as a Sixth Former, she still had put up with a teacher who treated her like a child. Now, as she pulled off her knickers and struggled to squeeze her quite large behind into her white shorts, she inwardly cursed this unnecessary imposition on her life.

Suddenly she realised that all the others had gone through to the gym and she was going to be last. With a sinking heart she quickly followed them, only to be confronted by the stick-like Miss Hartshorne with a large plimsoll in her hand whilst all the rest were running round the room.
